We talk a lot about “finding your why” and how knowing that will keep you going while you are pursuing your dreams.

When I made the change from a 70+ hour a week drone to a real estate investor, I had a whole bunch of “whys.”

All of my “whys” centered around wanting a better life for my family. We were doing OK…we had a nice house in the ‘burbs, bought a new car every couple of years, had the kids in a good school…you know…living the middle-class life they trick you into thinking means you are doing well.

We also charged Christmas on a credit card and spent the first 6 months of the following year paying it off…every single year.

I worked 70+ hours a week meaning that some days…a lot of days actually, I left home in the morning before my 2 boys were awake and didn’t get home until after they had gone to sleep. My wife was virtually a single parent for years.

We NEVER took a vacation. Oh, we had a day or two here and there for a holiday but never took a real vacation for over 10 years because we really couldn’t afford it without putting it on a credit card and besides, my job wouldn’t allow it as we were always short staffed. I would “sell” my vacations back to the company for extra money. Anyone else ever done that?

Oh yeah…we had arrived. The American Dream had been achieved. And it was killing us.

I started investing in real estate and 12 months later quit that job and never looked back. Within a couple of years, I was able to take my family on 6-week vacations to Hawaii and Belize. Week-long cruises were a common occurrence and we bought an RV and took a 3-month trip visiting every state in the Eastern US and into Canada… all while my new business produced income even while I was away.

My why kept me going when I was up until 3 in the morning, many mornings, learning all I could in newsgroups (we didn’t have Facebook Sub2 Groups back then) on the internet. My why kept me going when unmotivated sellers (before I knew to only talk to motivated sellers) would tell me to “go to hell” when I dared to make an offer on their house that would actually allow me to make a profit.

My why kept me going when I felt like I was never going to understand all of the terminology and techniques and deal structure in real estate.

My why kept me going through dozens of cold call dials when the seller said no before I found the one who finally said yes.

Knowing your why will do these things for you, too.

From the time my kids were 8 and 5 years old…they never knew a day when I was not there when they woke up in the morning and there to put them to bed at night. A strong why made that dream a reality.

What is your why? What keeps you chasing the dream day after day…never even thinking of giving up?
